[4/1-6/30] Hiroshi Wakuta "Shiisā" Fair


Hiroshi Wakuta, a master potter from Okinawa, has been creating the iconic Shiisā (guardian lion) for over 70 years. These statues, which stand at the entrances, rooftops, and gateposts of Okinawan homes, are believed to protect the inhabitants. Our souvenir shop proudly features a collection of his works, including traditional Shiisā as well as more dynamic, expressive pieces, each one showcasing a powerful and striking presence. These remarkable creations are available for display and purchase.

Hiroshi Wakuta / Potter

Born in Naha City, Okinawa, in 1937, he established his kiln, "Wakuta Pottery," in 1973 and has since won numerous prestigious awards. In 1989, he was honored with the title of Traditional Craftsman by the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry, and in the spring of 2013, he was awarded The Order of the Sacred Treasure, Silver Rays. Still actively creating pottery today, his vibrant and dynamic Shiisā (guardian lion) have gained a large following both within Okinawa and beyond.
